Mid-Hudson Library System Road Trip: Catskill Public Library

The Mid-Hudson Valley Library System is hosting the HVLS Roadtrip this summer and fall and it is a great excuse to explore the Hudson Valley.

Next stop is @catskillpubliclibrary 🐈❤️

Located at:

1 Franklin Street in Catskill, NY

If you have any accessibility concerns, park on Franklin Street in front of the main entrance. But if you are able to tackle a flight of stairs, you can park on Main St. and walk up the secret garden path to the library entrance!)

The building is a neo-classical (columns, symmetry, imposing facade!) and was (like the Saugerties Library) built with a 1901 grant from Andrew Carnegie.

1901 Construction crew layingn the foundation of the Catskill Public Library.

I found these historical photographs of the Library in this digital collection.

Along with its sister library the Palenville Branch Library, the Catskill Library has a robust calendar of free programming—a kid’s summer reading program, tons of craft activities, and adult programming like this watercolor class (which I couldn’t go to bc I caught a summer cold!🤧😭) and “How to find your house’s history” (which was happening when we visited and I was so bummed we didn’t have time to stay for it!)

But I’m now signed up for their newsletter and I’m going to keep an eye on the program calendar.

The building is very cool and if you want to explore the upper level, you need to make an appointment ahead of time.

While you’re in Catskill, walk up and down Main St.—there are a ton of great galleries, shops, and artist’s studios to visit.

If you’re there in the morning, stop in at Willa’s Bakery Cafe @willascatskill 111 Water St. #3 for breakfast or lunch. Everything’s delicious.

Then wander up Main St.

Amazing glassware and ceramic sculpture at Flux Studio & Gallery @flux_catskill at 462 Main St.and handmade ceramics at FisheyeCeramics (across the street.)

Stop for handmade chocolates and desserts at Catskill Chocolate Co.473 Main St. @catskill_chocolate co

The Little Art Shop @thelittleartshop.catskill is a delightful store with crafts and cute, cute gifts and cards and journals.

Swamp Angel Antiques (at the Day & Holt storefront) 349 Main St. has an amazing vintage tool collection—it’s like a museum where you can buy the exhibits.

And after you tour Main St, you can head over to 96 W. Bridge St. and grab a beer and a burger at Subversive Malt & Brewing. @subversivebeer
